Bridgestone Museum of Art Reconstruction Report: No. 8

2018.05.21
Since the start of this year, we have been able to see progress on the construction of our new building. The steel framework for the two floors were assembled in ten days, and the work has proceeded at the pace of five floors a month. When we photographed it at the end of April, the framework for nine floors was already in place. The museum will occupy floors one through six of the new building; the framework for each of those floors is now complete, and the construction of the reinforcing bar arrangement for their floors and the pouring of the concrete are proceeding steadily. At the site, it is beginning to be possible to imagine how the completed building will look, including the atrium rising from the first floor and the museum shop jutting out above the cafe. This 23-story high-rise building will be 150 meters tall; the steel framework for all of it, up to the roof, will be in place by early October.
It has been three years since our museum’s temporary closure in May, 2015. Demolition, excavation, building the foundations: it has been a long process, but the goal is within sight at last.
